GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT

Santa Claus to Open Work Shop in Golden
Claude Miner, who has been pinch-hitting for Santa Claus in the community for many years, announces that the Golden Plunge building will soon be converted into a Christmas work shop.
Colorado Transcript – November 19, 1936

During the Depression years, the Golden community collected used toys and cleaned or repaired them as needed for redistribution. This article mentions teachers, the ladies auxiliary of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, the WPA sewing room, Boy Scouts, school children, and the Camp Fire Girls all taking on various tasks. Some repaired the toys, some sewed new clothing for dolls, some collected and some delivered the toys.

The Golden Gem Theater hosted a “Toy Matinee.” A toy was the price of admission. The boys at the Industrial School ran a doll repair workshop.

Hundreds of little girls and boys in Golden and vicinity are made happy each year as a result of the cooperative effort of those who interest themselves in this work.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
