Golden History Moment

View from the clay pits – Dan Abbott Collection – click to enlarge

I love this photo from Dan Abbott’s collection. The rough walls in the foreground are the clay pits. The large building in the center (right under Castle Rock) is the South School. The lighter colored building to the right is Statton Hall on the School of Mines Campus. If you enlarge the photo, you’ll be able to spot two churches. The closer one is Calvary Church at 13th and Arapahoe. The more distant one is the old St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, formerly at 14th and East Street.

As for the date…Stratton Hall was built in 1904. The Castle Rock Scenic Railway and the dance hall on Castle Rock apparently hadn’t been built yet, so this was before 1913. The photo was taken sometime between 1904 and 1913.

Many thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
