Golden History Moment

Very early photo of downtown Golden – Dan Abbott collection – click to enlarge

For history fans, it’s always fun to try to establish the date when an old photo was taken. This is an excerpt from one of Dan Abbott’s photos. I zoomed in on Washington Avenue because some of the buildings shown in the photo are still around now. The oldest among them is the 1863 Loveland Building (map)–now the Old Capitol Grill. The second-oldest building in that block is 1112 Washington Avenue (map), built in 1871, now called “The Brick Room”–an extension of the Miners Saloon.

When you enlarge the photo, you’ll see that another building is under construction–it doesn’t have a roof yet. That’s 1106 Washington (map), which now houses the Clear Creek Flower Company and Rockin’ Horse Antiques. Since we know that building was constructed in 1871, that’s the answer: the photo was taken in 1871!
