A Little More History and Many Events

I had a big response to yesterday’s write-up about the lynching of Edgar Vanover. Reader Rose McLaughlin alerted me to a typo–I said that Vanover hid in a house on 13th Street, currently the site of Tributary Food Hall. She’s absolutely right! Vanover hid on 12th Street (on the site of Tributary Food Hall). What the 1922 Transcript article actually said was “on the present site of the Baptist Church.”

The 1st Baptist Church stood at 12th and Jackson from 1865-1961. At that time, the Baptists built a new church (at 19th and Washington). The Chamber bought the old church for $42,500 and leased the property to the city. The City razed the building and built a parking lot on the spot. It remained a parking lot until quite recently, when it became a mixed use building.
