In rummaging through old Transcript articles, I came across a rather shocking event that happened 80 years ago this month. Three Golden boys were hunting rabbits on North Table Mountain when “Calvin Phillips, the hermit of North Table mountain…turned his high powered rifle” on the boys. One boy was shot in the hip and another in the wrist. The shooter missed the third boy. The article goes on to say that “Phillips, a convicted murderer and reputed wealthy, has long terrorized his neighbors on North Table Mountain as well as unknowing picknickers and hikers….” Phillips was eventually sentenced to six months in the Jefferson County jail for shooting the boys. (Does that seem like a light sentence for shooting kids?)
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for digitizing the old Transcripts, and thanks to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
6PM The Sustainability Board will meet tonight in City Council Chambers. This group is doing a lot of interesting work. They are researching graywater applications and are hoping to do a pilot project in Golden. “Graywater” means reusing water rather than sending it straight to a water treatment plant. One example would be using laundry water for irrigation. They will do final planning for their upcoming (October 9th) Community Sustainability event. They will evaluate the reach and effectiveness of the residential compost program. The “Solar Rollers Team” from Golden High School will be there at the beginning of the meeting to demonstrate their solar-powered vehicle. See the meeting packet for more details….
