Golden History Moment

As the opening weekend of summer begins, we present some gardening inspiration from 1908, and two cautionary tales from 1914.

Colorado Transcript – May 28, 1908 – click to enlarge
Colorado Transcript – May 28, 1914

A two year old child was playing in the yard while his mother was hanging clothes on a line nearby. He was bitten just below the knee by one of the largest rattlesnakes “…ever seen in this vicinity. It measured 40 inches and had twelve rattles.” The mother killed the snake and called the neighbors for help. They applied a tourniquet to the leg and tried to suck out the poison. Dr. Kelly was called, but could do nothing. The child died the same evening.

Colorado Transcript – May 28, 1914

A ten year old boy was taking cattle to pasture when he fell from a horse. “The saddled turned and the boy plunged to the ground, striking on his head.” Dr. Kelly was called and expressed the opinion that death had probably been instantaneous.

Enjoy your holiday weekend, but be careful out there!
