8th Street Project Approved, New Art Program Proposed

February 7, 2019

The new apartments and hotel on 8th Street were approved by the Planning Commission last night. The discussion was heated. If you didn’t get a chance to watch the meeting live, you can always review it by scrolling down to the Planning Commission section on the City’s Agenda page and clicking the link that says “Audio.”

Commissioner Cameron reminded the assembled audience that positions would be opening on several of the City’s boards and commissions (though not Planning Commission), and now is the time to submit an application to serve.

Golden Library Children's Program

Monday
2PM
The Library is hosting Wild Senses. Little learners take on animal behaviors to experience the natural world around them, as animals would. An adventurous Denver Museum of Nature & Science educator guides explorers as they smell out their food like a squirrel, hunt in the dark like a raccoon, and use infrared detection to see prey like a snake. Amaze and delight your animals – er, kids – with pretend play and fun.  Register

5:30-7:30PM Trailblazers FREE Open Climbing on the climbing wall inside the American Mountaineering Center. Please bring your own harness, belay device and climbing shoes (approach shoes or even normal athletic shoes work just fine on this wall). No chalk. 710 10th Street, Golden, CO (map)

6-8PM Golden Safety Academy – Run, Hide, Fight (Active Shooter)
The mission of the Golden Safety Academy is to help educate and empower citizens with information and resources that enhance their personal safety and crime prevention.  Participants must be over the age of 16, residents of Golden, and limit two people per household.  If you are interested in attending this session, please register here.

The Golden Urban Renewal Authority (GURA) meets tonight at 6:30 in City Council Chambers. They will discuss last month’s field trip to the West Colfax urban renewal area. Staff will report on construction projects in the West Colfax area, including the Duluth Trading Company in the old Staples store and several new buildings that are near completion in Gateway Village. Staff will also update them about the new DeLong Park on 23rd Street (the buildings have been razed).  Learn more….

Tuesday
The National Renewable Energy Lab will host a Power Lunch Lecture tomorrow from 12-1PM. The topic is Modernizing the Electric Grid An Exciting Time to Be Working in the Area of Power Systems.  Presented by Annabelle Pratt, Ph.D., Principal Engineer, Power Systems Engineering Center at NREL

The electric grid is the world’s largest machine. Every time you plug a device into an outlet, you are connecting to a marvelously complex machine–technically, financially and socially. Do we need to invest in modernizing the grid so that we can continue to have access to affordable, reliable and sustainable power? Are technologies developing in a way that would allow consumers to take an active part in a modernized grid? Join Dr. Annabelle Pratt, Principal Engineer with the Power Systems Engineering Center at NREL, as she discusses the opportunities and challenges in modernizing the electric grid.

Registration is required. Call 303-384-6565 or e-mail education.center@nrel.gov to make a reservation for this free public program. Participants are welcome to bring a lunch to enjoy during the presentation.

Golden Night Out at the Mountaineering Museum - Golden Colorado

Golden Night Out
Tonight from 7-10PM: Enjoy a night out in Golden with live art by Denver-based graffiti artist JOLT, tasty cocktails from Golden Moon Distillery, and live music. Exciting Planning Commission Meeting Tonight
Calvary Church, at 13th & Arapahoe, bought the Armory Building in 2014. They would like the City to vacate the street between the two structures so it can be turned into “a pedestrian and plaza space that would serve the needs of their planned ‘campus’ environment, as well as create amenities, such as seating and landscaping, that is open to the public.” They are suggesting that the traffic that currently uses that block of Arapahoe Street be routed down Miners Alley instead.  The Planning Commission will consider the church’s site plan tonight.  Learn more by reading the meeting packet….

Housing Development on Ford St. - Golden Colorado

Planning Commission will also consider a site plan for a proposed four-unit 3-story townhouse development that would replace two small houses at 1917 and 1919 Ford Street.  Learn more….

Vote for Art
The Public Art Commission will meet tomorrow morning at 9AM in City Council Chambers. They are planning to install a large new piece of art just off Highway 93 as it enters Golden. They have narrowed the candidates down to three possibilities, and now they’re asking the public to vote. Please visit Guiding Golden and tell them which piece you’d like them to commission.

Ladies Only Sample Tour - Golden ColoradoL.O.S.T.
Are you planning to do the Ladies Only Sample Tour tomorrow? You should! It runs from 4-8PM, and of course you can come and go whenever you like. Buy a wristband and then go from business to business downtown, collecting samples from the stores and restaurants. You can buy a wristband at several downtown businesses (see the LOST page for the list). If they are still available, you can buy one the night of the tour at 11th and Washington.
