SO MUCH Going On!

The Mountaineering Museum is hosting their first ever outdoor movie night, and it includes a Beers of Golden Happy Hour, with beer from Golden City Brewery, Mountain Toad Brewing, Barrels & Bottles Brewery, and Holidaily Brewing Company. Street Tacos will also be available. The Happy Hour will be 5-7 and the films will run from 7-9. Tomorrow is going to be a super-busy day in Golden, so I’ll get a head start on describing the events. Both Farmers Markets (10th & Illinois and 15th and Jackson) will be running in the morning. The Be a Tool! group will be swarming all over town, helping people with home repairs.

Golden Fire Department Safety Day

The Golden Fire Department will be hosting Safety and Preparedness Day from 10AM-2PM at Fire Station #1, 911 10th St. This is a fun, family-friendly event that includes personal fire truck tours, live fire demonstrations, game-based fire and burn education for all ages, and free car seat checks. There will be many opportunities to learn about safety in the home and the community. There will also be drawings for door prizes and bottomless popcorn along with an assortment of refreshments.

Map showing wards and districts in Golden ColoradoCouncilor Casey Brown will hold a Coffee with a Councilor from 10-11 at White Ash Mine Park (map). He has invited the two candidates for City Council Ward 4 (Mikey Sheridan and Laura Weinberg), so this is a good opportunity to meet them in an informal environment and ask where they stand on the issues.

The Golden City Brewery will host their 17th annual GOLDENFEST, which is a fund-raiser that benefits the Golden Fire Department.  Stop by for a beer, and help them reach their goal of $5,000 to give to the Fire Department this year.

The stores downtown will be holding a massive SIDEWALK SALE, so definitely plan to stroll through downtown tomorrow!

YESTERDAY
Yesterday, I said that the Fire Department would be burning a house that was scheduled for demolition as a training exercise.  I was wrong–they didn’t actually burn it; they just filled it with smoke.  Dave Powers was on hand, and got some nice photographs of the Fire Department at work!

TODAY
Since the schools are letting out early today, the Library has Freaky Friday (games and Legos) from 2-3:30.

TONIGHT
You can visit the Emerald City tonight, via the High School’s production of The Wizard of Oz.  The show is at 7.

The GOLDEN ELKS CLUB is having an international dinner at 6, followed by a dance at 7:30.

GOLDEN MOON SPEAKEASY has an all night line-up of music to celebrate St. Patricks Day.  Lots of green, great music, and cocktails of course!  Mikey Smith: 4PM-7PM  |  Matt Weatherbee and the Lookouts: 8PM-11PM.

THE BUFFALO ROSE has Irish Dancing tonight at 8, featuring the Celtic Steps.  Free admission, but tips are appreciated.  They’ll also be serving corned beef reubens, corned beef dinners, Jameson and Bushmills Irish Whiskey, Car Bomgs, Green Coors Light, and Guiness in cans.

MOUNTAIN TOAD will be serving Ryrish Stout and Two Gingers – a Double Irish Red aged in Oak.  Their food truck (Rolling Dough) will be serving Reuben Pizzas.

BARRELS & BOTTLES will host Reuben Gonzales on acoustic guitar from 6-9.

Tuesday April 12th, 6:30PM – Golden Beer Talk at Windy Saddle Cafe
This month’s Golden Beer Talk will feature CSM’s Dr. Kathryn Johnson, discussing “The Evolution of Wind Energy in Colorado and Beyond.”  Wind energy presents a major growth opportunity spanning 2014’s 4.4% of national electricity generation and the 20% penetration described in the U.S. Department of Energy’s 20% Wind Energy by 2030 report.

Golden Beer Talks are similar to TED Talks, with a local twist:  every month, we bring in beer from one of Golden’s craft breweries.  Our Beer Ambassador gives a brief talk about the beer and the brewery, then we move on to the featured speaker.  Our topics have ranged from microbiology to Colorado history; from bubonic plague to plagues of locusts.  It’s always fun, and always interesting!

This month’s featured brewery is Mountain ToadWindy Saddle will be offering dinner.  There is no cover charge, no purchase is necessary, and everyone is welcome.  Learn more….

Golden Beer Talks

TUESDAY – April 12th – 6:30PM – Windy Saddle Cafe
This month’s Golden Beer Talk will feature CSM’s Dr. Kathryn Johnson, who will discuss “The Evolution of Wind Energy in Colorado and Beyond.”  Dr. Johnson will describe how advances in wind turbines have contributed to the rapid growth of wind energy systems and how local research has contributed to that growth. She also will describe future directions for wind energy systems that will enable more cost-efficient clean energy generation.

A Beer Talk is similar to a TED Talk–but done Golden-style!  We bring in beer from one of Golden’s craft breweries, and have a brief talk about the featured brewery and beers.  Then we move on to the featured speaker, followed by a brief break, finishing with Q&A.  Our topics range from microbiology to Colorado history, bubonic plague to plagues of locusts.

Lots of choices

No Girls Allowed - Quilts by Men at the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum

The Quilt Museum’s very popular biennial show, No Girls Allowed! opens today.  This show consists entirely of quilts made by men.  Their opening night reception will be next Friday, so you have a week before then to be the first of your friends to see it!  The Denver Post has a nice article about the exhibition.


Miners Alley Playhouse opens a new play this weekend:  4000 Miles.  If you can make it tonight, you’ll get in on their fabulous free opening tonight buffet after the play.


UllrGrass Music & Beer Festival starts today.  Afternoon performances will take place at Mountain Toad (3:30-4:30 Burn it Blue; 4:45-6 Thunder&Rain; 6:15-7:30UllrGrass Pickers).  Evening performances will be at the Buffalo Rose (6:30-8 Timber; 8-915 Luke Bulla Band; 9:30-11 Rapidgrass Quintet; 11:15-close Head for the Hills).  Tomorrow morning they’ll have a Kids Camp and Coffee Hour from 11-11:55, followed by a parade at noon.  All Saturday daytime activities will take place in Parfet Park (10th & Washington).  Learn more at ullrgrass.com.


Tomorrow morning (Saturday the 30th) from 10-12, the City will host a presentation about Golden’s Well-Being Index.  The presentation will feature reports from Gallup Healthways, the Colorado School of Public Health and the Tobacco Free Jeffco Alliance.   It will take place in City Council Chambers.

Ullr Grass Tickets now available

UllrGrass Music Festival in Golden

Last year’s Ullr Grass Music & Beer Festival was a big success, so they’re doing it again!  The event will kick off on Friday afternoon the 29th, with several sets at Mountain Toad.  In the evening, the music will migrate over to the Buffalo Rose.  During the day on Saturday (the 30th) and Sunday (the 31st), we’ll have live music OUTSIDE in Parfet Park!  Saturday night’s festivities will take place at the Buffalo Rose.  Saturday afternoon they’ll also be having a beer festival in Parfet Park, with unlimited tasting from 27 breweries and cideries.

Lots of local groups will be performing, including several that you see around town and at the Golden Music Festival.  Tickets are now on sale!

Whence cometh the name?  Ullr was a Norse god of winter.

Free chili! (corrected date: Jan 23rd)

chili-beer-supperThe Lions Club’s annual chili supper is scheduled for Saturday night, January 23rd.  This year, they’re taking a new approach:  the chili is free, and three of Golden’s craft breweries (Barrels & Bottles, Mountain Toad, and Golden City Brewery) will be selling beer for $5 a pint.  All proceeds will go to support the Lions’ many charitable and community service projects.  This event is always fun, and this year promises to be tastier than ever!  Be sure to get it on your calendar!

Coffee, beer, and politics

Just a reminder–there’s a public information meeting tonight from 6-8 at the Community Center about the Hwy 6 and 19th Street interchange.

Pangea Coffee Roasters is celebrating their grand opening tonight from 4-6 and having a ribbon-cutting tonight at 5:30.  Stop by the shop and enjoy some complimentary coffee and pastries.

Tomorrow night, Representative Jessie Danielson will be at Mountain Toad Brewery starting at 5:30 for News and Brews.  Here’s your chance to meet your legislator and learn about the recent legislative session!
