What’s Happening with ‘What’s Happening in Golden’–and also What’s Happening Today and Tomorrow

May 31, 2019

In early April, I wrote a note explaining that What’s Happening in Golden? was not produced or sponsored by the City. I remarked that I pay the costs of producing and hosting this blog out of pocket. That cost has been partially offset by a long-running daily blog that the city has sponsored–Golden Business News. Both blogs have appeared daily on the Goldentoday.com home page.

Golden Business News was started in 2011, to support our local businesses. The program was perennially popular with both the merchants and the audience, but the City staff wanted a City employee to run the program, and wanted to focus more on business-to-business, so Golden Business News ends today.

What’s Happening in Golden? goes to a larger audience than the Business News did, and I plan to keep writing it. I think it’s good for the Golden community to have a single source of information that covers civic, cultural, school and business events all in one place.

The loss of the City contract does put me in a financial bind. I have asked a few of my supporters to sponsor the month of June to the tune of $100 each.  If you would like to support June or a future month, please let me know!  I also plan to set up a voluntary subscription form for people who would like to make smaller, recurring monthly contributions.

This seems like a good time to check in with my audience. Do you have any suggestions as to content or frequency? Should I cut back to posting weekly? Are there topics that you think I should drop–city meetings, Chamber events, live music listings, school events, lectures, etc?  What do you specifically want me to keep? Tell me what you think! barb@goldentoday.com.

Blooms, Breweries, and Bikes, Councilors and Classic Cars in Golden

May 4, 2019

This should be a beautiful weekend in Golden, with a high of 70 both days. One week from today is Greener Golden day, which means you’ll be able to pick up your Garden in a Box between 12 and 3PM. If you haven’t ordered one yet, you’re in LUCK: they’re offering a $10 discount for last-minute orders, in addition to the $25 discount you can get if you’re a Golden resident. Those gardens are a great deal–healthy plants that come with planting and maintenance instructions. I’ve been ordering the Bees ‘N’ Blooms/Pollinators gardens for many years, and as a result have a yard full of perennials, butterflies, and hummingbirds. This year I’m branching out and buying a couple of Xeric Greatest Hits gardens.

Mountain Toad Brewing is hosting Storytime with Ginger from 11:30-12:30. Join Ginger Barrett for a fun storytime and activity at Mountain Toad! Ginger is an Usborne representative and there will be the opportunity to buy a book or two for your child after storytime. This event is free and open to all.

This is a BIG DAY for Karen Hertz at Holidaily Brewing. She is opening the new brewing facility (across the street from the taproom), which will triple their brewing capacity. It’s great to see a Golden business growing and thriving. Their ribbon cutting is at 12:30PM today. They are offering brewery tours today and tomorrow, but you must sign up for a slot.

On a somewhat related subject, Golden Moon Distillery, which had the ribbon cutting for their expansion on Thursday, is offering free distillery tours from 11AM-3PM today.

Optimists Club of Golden Colorado

The Golden Optimists Club are holding an Open House today from 1-5PM at their Bicycle Recycling shop. Learn about their bike repair project and see if you might like to lend a hand!

COFFEE WITH A COUNCILOR takes place today at 3PM at Cafe 13. This is your chance to discuss Golden issues with Councilors Casey Brown and Saiorse Charis-Graves. Want to check the status on the building moratorium and building code changes? Or the City’s purchase of the Coors office building and a bunch of property in Goosetown? Or citizen efforts to raise funds for open space, affordable housing, or the cultural organizations? Here’s your chance to discuss it with the ones who know it best!

The Golden Concert Choir will give their spring concert this afternoon: Celebrations of Walt Whitman. Learn more….

The Golden Super Cruise officially starts up for the year today! If you admire classic cars, visit South Golden Road between 5 and 8:30PM to ogle the cars and talk to the enthusiasts who have restored them.

Saturday Music:
Ace Hi Tavern – Karaoke at 9PM
Buffalo Rose – Knot Rock at 7:30 and 70s Tribute at 9:30
Dirty Dogs Roadhouse – The Resonators, 7-11PM
Wrigley’s Chicago Bar & Grill – Look Both Ways, 4-8PM

Sunday Preview:
8-9AM Coffee with a Ranger at the Lookout Mountain Nature Center. Please bring your own cup.
