Graves, News, Paving Paradise, and Earthquakes

Dave Powers attended last night’s candlelight vigil at Buffalo Bill’s grave.  It was cold and windy, but he got some nice photos of the participants.

The Buffalo Rose made an interesting announcement yesterday.  They had planned to close early this year for an extensive remodeling, and anticipated being closed all year.  As it turns out, the planning, permitting, financing, etc., is taking longer than anticipated, so they now plan to remain open until at least late 2017.  So please continue to visit them for drinks & dining, and by all means, plan to use their venue for your events.

Paving Paradise
The Jefferson County Commissions will soon be voting on zoning that would allow the Rooney Ranch–which is the big, undeveloped valley between Golden and Morrison–to be filled with car dealerships and retail complexes.  There’s a rally this afternoon from 4-6:30 at the County Courthouse (map) to encourage the Commissioners to Save Dinosaur RidgeDon’t let them pave paradise and put up a parking lot! Come join your neighbors and friends to help the County hear our voices loud and clear! Dinosaur Ridge is a national treasure and a car dealership would be a disaster! Help the Commissioners understand! More info.

Geology Museum Lecture
Friends of the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum will hold their monthly lecture tomorrow night (Thursday 1/12) at 6:30 in the Parker Student Center, 1310 Maple St.  Their guest speaker will be Dr. Gavin Hayes, Research Geophysicist, USGS National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC) discussing “Earthquakes and Earthquake Response in the 21st Century”

Earthquakes are a natural part of the world we live in — a consequence of the relative motions of tectonic plates, which make up the jigsaw puzzle of the Earth’s outer shell.  We cannot prevent them, and in a world in which populations are increasing – notably in megacities that are often located in ares of high seismic hazard – we must learn to better mitigate their impact.  Socializing and munchies begin at 6:30 p.m. The lecture will start at 7:00 p.m.  Admission is free and all are welcome.

Forecast
Today will be warm (for January) with a high of 48, but we may get 1-3 inches of snow tonight.
