Cruising, Parking, Partying, and Pilgrims

The first Golden Bike Cruise of the season is tonight. Costumes are optional, but if you want to dress up, the theme for this first cruise is Grease/50s. Dust off your poodle skirts and leather jackets! Tonight’s musical guest is Dorado, and the volunteer partner will be the Continental Divide Trail Coalition. Bob’s Atomic Burgers will be serving food and New Terrain Brewing will have two beers on tap. Food and drink are available starting at 6; the ride starts at 7, and the drawings take place after the ride. The ride starts at 10th Street and Illinois–the parking lot west of the Golden Library. The Mobility and Transportation Advisory Board (MTAB) will deal with two interesting cases tonight. The first relates to the proposed Golden Overlook PUD near Golden Heights Park. The owner of the property hopes to build high-end storage units on that property. Vehicles would access the area via 4th Avenue. Residents of the area (and users of the park) feel that 4th Avenue is already overtaxed with traffic and parked cars, that traffic is already forced to go through one at a time, and that it cannot handle more traffic without cutting into the park property. The Planning Commission asked MTAB to evaluate the street because it may need to be improved, regardless of whether the PUD comes to pass.

The second has arisen because of a project on Vernon Drive. The lots along that street have Vernon in front and Table Drive immediately behind. They were built without garages, so the residents park on Vernon. The same is true of the houses on Table Drive–built without garages, so they park on Table Drive. One house on Vernon St. has been gutted, to the point where you can see straight through from Vernon to Table! Residents on Table Drive have heard that the developer plans to build a garage on the back of the lot, with access off of Table Drive. They are concerned that this would set a precedent for the rest of the homes on Vernon Drive, and that new garages all along Vernon would take away half of the available parking on Table Drive. City staff believe this could occur in other places in town, so they want MTAB to define a policy for “dual-frontage lots.” See the meeting agenda….

Wednesday Preview:

The Golden History Museum will host an intriguing lecture tomorrow night from 6-7:30PM: A Different Kind of Pilgrim to Early New England. When we think about the key figures of early American history, we think of explorers, or Pilgrims, or Native Americans—not cattle, or goats, or swine. But livestock played a vitally important role in the colonization of the New World. These animals helped to sustain English colonists but also generated friction with Indians and became a driving force in westward expansion. Learn more and buy tickets….
