Controversial New Mountain Bike Trails

I know we’re supposed to be checking Guiding Golden frequently, so we’ll know what the city is working on and on which topics they’re soliciting comments–but I often forget to check it for weeks on end.  Last night I came across a new Facebook page, called “Friends of Kinney Run.” (8/25/18 – address correction: it’s now a website friendsofkinneyrun.com.)  It was created to alert people in the southwest part of town (Heritage Dells, Tripp Ranch, Stonebridge, etc.) about a proposed plan to put in a series of dirt trails to run parallel to the existing concrete trails for use by mountain bikers.

8/25/18 – The group that is in favor of building the trail also has a website detailing their reasons for wanting the trail:  goldengiddyup.com/stsfaq.

The Facebook page has photos and maps showing the routes for the proposed trails, which includes some elk calving areas, the historic Cambria lime kiln, and the Bachman open space. The page encourages people in the affected neighborhoods to visit Guiding Golden and make comments. To learn more about the project go to guidinggolden.com/singletrack-sidewalks. To review the comments thusfar (and perhaps add some of your own), go to the guestbook for that topic.  Suffice it to say–people feel strongly in both directions.

There will be a public meeting about the proposed trails at Shelton Elementary School (420 Crawford Street, Golden, CO – map) on August 28th from 6-8PM. Unfortunately, meetings held at Shelton aren’t broadcast or recorded, so you will need to attend in person to know what happens.
