Golden Beer Talks: Sharks!

May 14, 2019

This will be a special meeting of Golden Beer Talks: it’s our last meeting at Windy Saddle Cafe. Despite our deep affection for our “birthplace,” we have outgrown the available space in Windy Saddle. Next month, we’ll be moving across the street to the Buffalo Rose. Tonight, we plan to celebrate our hostess of 5-1/2 years…Windy Saddle’s owner, DeAnn Wieber.

This evening, Dr. Mikki McComb-Kobza of the Ocean First Institute will tell us about The World of Sharks. Sharks are iconic and misunderstood species with a long evolutionary history. There are over 500 living shark species, all with unique adaptations, that have radiated into nearly every aquatic habitat. There is tremendous diversity in shark species life histories, reproductive modes, habitat use, sensory biology, ecology, and behavior. Sharks are under global threat from human interference and over 30% are at risk for extinction. Today, research and conservation efforts are targeting effective ways to protect endangered species. For this talk, Dr. Mikki McComb-Kobza will share the story of shark diversification and their fascinating adaptations, as well as aspects of her ongoing conservation and research efforts through the Ocean First Institute. Learn more….

Golden Beer Talks officially starts at 6:30, but the regulars will start showing up at about 6 to secure a table. Windy Saddle will not be serving dinner tonight, instead, DeAnn plans to serve a variety of snacks and craft beers.

Beer Talks and Slingin’ Paint at Windy Saddle

February 11, 2019

This is a busy week at Windy Saddle Cafe. Tomorrow night (Tuesday Feb. 12th at 6:30PM) they’ll be hosting the monthly Golden Beer Talk. This monthly lecture series has covered a huge range of topics, including the use of science in murder investigations, maps, political responses to drought, African Archaeology, caves, wildland fires, lasers, soul food, growing hops, how to spot fake news, injecting microbots for removing blood clots, blood-sucking insects, the Theory of Relativity, bacteria, locusts, the space program, soul food, bees, microbes, and many other obscure and interesting topics.

This month, Claire Zilber, MD, will discuss the physiological effects of acute and chronic stress on immune functioning. This month’s Golden brewery is Coors, and if you’re a Beer Talks regular, you know why that’s good news! As always, there is no cover charge, but space is limited. If you want to be assured of a chair, arrive early.

On Valentine’s Day (Thursday Feb. 14th, 6:30-8:30PM), Windy Saddle will team up with Art on the Brix to host Slingin’ Paint in the Saddle.

Saddle up single or bring a date and paint yourself a pair of wine
glasses. We’ll help you with your own special style and show you how to turn your glasses into a set if they’re going home together and will live side by side!

As always, enjoy sipping and snacking on something scrumptious from the bar at Windy Saddle while we walk you through an entertaining and artful experience. No experience necessary, just an adventurous spirit ~ Sign up soon to save your spot!
