See ‘Queen of Conspiracy’ at Miners Alley Playhouse

May 16, 2019

John Lennon. Frank Zappa. Henry Miller. Richard Nixon. You may know these 1970’s icons…but have you ever heard of Mae Brussell? The one-time Queen of Conspiracy, she attracted audiences of thousands. Her radio shows analyzed public government records to link the JFK and RFK assassinations with the Watergate scandal. Loyal fans and celebrities looking to make sense of an increasingly complex, crazy world were hungry for Brussell’s version of the truth. Josh Hartwell’s new drama, set in present-day Denver, imagines the family who inherits Brussell’s legacy. What will they do when her past invades their present?

Miners Alley Playhouse is opening a new play this weekend: Queen of Conspiracy. Performances are Thursday-Saturday at 7:30 and Sunday at 2PM. This play is rated R for strong language and content. Queen of Conspiracy will run May 17th-June 23rd.

Tomorrow night’s performance (Friday 5/17) will be followed by their free opening night party, featuring an excellent buffet, so it’s a great night to attend!

Shop Early | Buy an Experience | Do Yoga | Avoid Small Pox

December 23, 2018

As many of the merchants mentioned in their “Last Minute Gift Idea” videos, they will be open today and will be closing early tomorrow–some as early as 3PM and some as late as 5PM. If you still have some gifts to buy, better get out and do it!

Do you have people on your list who don’t need a thing? How about buying them an experience? I suggest tickets to Miners Alley Playhouse, the Colorado Cowboy Gathering (coming up in January), the Colorado Environmental Film Festival (coming up in February), a concert by the Jefferson Symphony or West Side Live Presents.

A membership to the Golden History Museum includes free admission to more than a dozen lectures planned during 2019. A membership to the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum provides free admission to their popular Sunday at the Museum series

PranaTonic is offering a special Christmas Eve Yoga class from 9-10:30AM tomorrow morning. All other classes are cancelled for tomorrow.

Buy Local (Avoid Small Pox)
I recently gave a lecture on Golden’s Christmas celebrations and how they’ve changed over the past 159 years. One thing that hasn’t changed is the consistent encouragement, in our local paper, to patronize Golden’s stores. What follows is my favorite reminder, which I like so much that I plan to repeat it every year:

Colorado Transcript – December 22, 1921Golden merchants have an excellent line of Christmas goods and there is no use in journeying to Denver to buy your Christmas goods. Besides, look at the danger of getting murdered, held up, run over or contracting small pox. Buy at home, help your home town and be safe.

Three New Businesses Downtown

October 6, 2018

Foss Building Businesses

It’s clear that age does not wither nor custom stale the Foss family’s ability to create an attractive retail space.  This time, they’ve created three!

Some of you may not remember, but for 94 years, Foss Drug Store was one of downtown Golden’s anchor stores.  It opened in 1913 and closed in 2007.  Many feared that the loss of Foss Drug would send downtown Golden into an economic tailspin, but the Foss family quickly found new tenants–Peak Cycles, Vital Outdoors, Miners Alley Playhouse, Jolynn’s Food and Spirits, and the Foss Building Liquor Store.  The liquor store occupied the large space that had formerly served as the liquor department for Foss Drug.  On New Year’s Eve, 2017, that store closed, and the Fosses have spent the past nine months upgrading and subdividing the space.  Now we have three new businesses downtown:  Old Barrel Tea Company, Southern Charm Home Decor, and Foss Company Wine | Spirits | Beer.

Old Barrel Tea Company - Golden ColoradoI visited the Old Barrel Tea Company yesterday.  They sell raw, unfiltered honey, herbs and spices, and many, MANY blends of loose-leaf tea.  (Needless to say, the place smells delicious!)  While chatting with store manager Heather Maccalous, I mentioned that I’d been coughing at night.  She steered me over to the “Apothecary” section, and introduced me to “THROAT” blend, which includes licorice root, raspberry leaves, hibiscus flowers, orange peel, cinnamon bark, aniseed, and slippery elm.  I tried it at home, and can report that it was quite effective.  I look forward to trying their other teas.

Make a point of visiting the store today.  Heather promises to have tea samples on hand for your enjoyment!

The 39 Steps Opening at Miners Alley

March 23, 2018

Alfred Hitchcock's The 39 Steps at Miners Alley Playhouse - Golden Colorado

Miners Alley Playhouse is opening a new play this weekend: Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps.  This is a new, comedic version of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic The 39 Steps. The play won the 2007 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy, and in 2008 it was nominated for six Tony Awards.

See what the critics have to say:

“THEATRE AT ITS FINEST!… ABSURDLY ENJOYABLE! THIS GLEEFULLY THEATRICAL RIFF ON HITCHCOCK’S FILM IS FAST AND FROTHY, PERFORMED BY A CAST OF FOUR THAT SEEMS LIKE A CAST OF THOUSANDS.”- THE NEW YORK TIMES

“INGENUOUS! A DIZZY DELIGHT!” – DAILY NEWS

“RIOTOUS…MARVELOUS!” – THE NEW YORK POST

“ROLLICKING FUN! HUGELY ENTERTAINING!” – SUNDAY TIMES

“A WONDERFUL TRIUMPH OF THEATRE!” – BBC RADIO 4

The 39 Steps will run through April 29th. Performances are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 7:30PM, and Sunday at 2PM.

Fun Home at Miners Alley Playhouse

January 26, 2018

Fun Home at Miners Alley Playhouse - Golden Colorado

Miners Alley is opening a new play this weekend: Fun Home. Here’s the plot: When her father dies unexpectedly, graphic novelist Alison dives deep into her past to tell the story of the volatile, brilliant, one-of-a-kind man whose temperament and secretes defined her family and her life. Moving between past and present, Alison relives her unique childhood playing at the family’s Bechdel Funeral Home, her growing understanding of her own sexuality and the looming, unanswerable questions about her father’s hidden desires. Fun Home is a refreshingly honest, wholly original musical about seeing your parents through grown-up eyes.

The play was developed from a graphic memoir and it’s a musical. The Broadway production won FIVE Tony Awards in 2015, including Best Musical.

Since this is the first play of the year, it’s not too late to get full season tickets, which gives you reserved seating and a 10% discount off individual ticket prices. Learn more about season tickets or buy single performance tickets for Fun Home.
